Klondike Derby at Mt. Charleston 2-28-09

Troop 138 camp site at daybreak. Looks really cold.
Scout sled team 138 in action. Can you say "mush".

"MUSH" again. This time Shayne is in the lead.

The finished product (the sled).

The boys learning the cross country ski.

The Klondike Derby was put on by Las Vegas Area Boy Scout Council at Mt. Charleston on February 28th. The boys had a great time. Our boys are looking forward to doing it again. They already have another trip planned for the 7th of March.

Klondike 2-28-09

Learning to build a snow shelter.

All the boys had a fun game of broom ball (not sure which side won).

Shayne learning how to snow shoe. This was his first time on snow shoes and he says he had a blast and would love to do it again.

All the boys getting a lesson in snow shoeing.

Around the campfire trying to stay warm and heat up their dinner (which by the way was not gourmet, it was top Ramon noddles).

Building of the snow sled

Some of the boys and leaders from our Troop building the snow sled for the Klondike Derby they would be attending on February 28th at Mt. Charleston. As you can see it did not get finished but it was done in time for the derby. They had a great time building it. My old skies (which I will never use again) were donated to a good cause (the sled). The sled is the same principal as a dog sled it just uses scouts to pull it instead of dogs (great idea).

Snow Camp at Mt. Charleston

Shayne went to a Snow Camp on February 13th and 14th with our Boy Scout Troop to Mt. Charleston. It was hosted by another Troop. The boys had a great time sledding and camping in the snow. They were excited to come back to Las Vegas and the warmer temps. The temperatures on Mt. Charleston were down in the low 30's. These city boys were not used to that.
